New Facilities to Elevate Care at SMH-Sarasota Campus
Construction is under way at the Sarasota campus on two premier new facilities that will open in 2025:
New Institute to Provide World-Class Education & Research Opportunities
Located on the south end of the campus on Arlington Street, the Kolschowsky Research and Education Institute currently under construction will be a state-of-the-art center that expands research and training opportunities for physicians and clinicians caring for patients throughout the region.
A $25 million gift from the Gerald A. and Karen A. Kolschowsky Foundation was the catalyst that allowed SMH to break ground on the new facility this past June. By lending their name to the institute, the Kolschowskys hope to inspire other philanthropists to fund community hospital research initiatives and clinical advances. Located across from the Rehab Pavilion, the new institute, which will open in 2025, will support clinical trials and research studies and offer a range of education programs and an advanced simulation center that expands hands-on training opportunities for staff and students.
Sarasota Memorial’s research and graduate medical education programs have tripled in size in recent years, with more than 50 active clinical studies under way and nearly 70 physicians training in residency and fellowship programs at SMH each year. Relocating SMH education and training programs to the new institute will free up more more space inside the hospital for direct patient care services.
In addition, the new facility, located on the site of the old Doctors Gardens office complex, will have an adjacent parking garage to help boost campus parking capacity.

New Cancer Pavilion to Provide Full Array of Outpatient Services
Sarasota Memorial’s vision to transform cancer care is quickly becoming a reality with new facilities, new services and a growing multi-disciplinary team of oncology specialists.
On the north end of the SMH-Sarasota Campus, the health system recently broke ground on a new outpatient Cancer Pavilion, the third facility that makes up the expanding Brian D. Jellison Cancer Institute.
The 7-story, 200,000-square-foot facility is being constructed on Waldemere Street on the site of the old Cape Outpatient Surgery Center, across from the inpatient Oncology Tower that opened in 2021. SMH opened its first Cancer Institute facility, a state-of-the-art Radiation Oncology Center on University Parkway, in 2020.
When it opens in late 2025, the new Cancer Pavilion will provide a full array of outpatient oncology services under one roof, including:
• A new and expanded breast health center
• Outpatient surgery suites
• Advanced HDR brachytherapy
• Radiation Oncology
• Infusion Center
• Diagnostic imaging suite, with the latest CT and MRI technology
• Medical, surgical and radiation oncology physician practices
• Integrative care clinics
• Patient navigation and support
The new facility also will have a large adjacent parking garage to help ease traffic congestion at the Sarasota campus.
